Man alone can only be understood by man alone. Just the same, society is always at work trying to make man a member of a group -- of a race, a religion, a nation, a school. Men make “idols” for to worship. When someone worships an object or a person as if it is God, that object or person becomes God for the worshiper. The idols can be a godlike figure, the state, the church, a person, possessions. The gods are idols that are the work of man's own hands -- they are things, and man bows down and worships things; worships that which he has created himself. In doing so he transforms himself into a thing.
